Catalysing Change: Expanding Access and Inclusion through Informal STEM Ecosystems: A Case Study of Team Sigma (2023–2026)

Abstract

This study examines how Team Sigma (#9692), a student-led FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team from India, has developed a scalable model to expand STEM access for underserved communities while fostering inclusion of neurodivergent individuals. Using a mixed-methods case study approach, the research integrates qualitative insights and quantitative data from initiatives such as the Build Your FIRST Robot (BYFR) program and AI Fellowship. Findings indicate that sustained, hands-on learning environments significantly enhance student engagement, institutional adoption, and pathway development. The study proposes an ecosystem-based framework for informal STEM education in the Global South, highlighting the role of continuity, mentorship, and inclusion in driving meaningful impact.
