Abstract

This article was developed in the framework of the project “Conservación y uso sostenible de los recursos fitogenéticos locales para la alimentación y la agricultura (RFAA) para contribuir a la seguridad alimentaria de los pequeños agricultores de Argentina” funded in the 4th project cycle of the Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In Covunco Abajo, Zapala, Neuquén, Argentina, a group of women came together through workshops organized by the INTA Rural Extension Agency to address issues related to their production systems. During these workshops, it became evident that all participants conserved a remarkable diversity of local seeds, particularly beans, including nine varieties belonging to two species, Phaseolus vulgaris and P. coccineus. These varieties were obtained mainly through family inheritance and seed exchange, and were valued for food, ornamental, commercial, and emotional purposes. Using the framework of biocultural diversity from an ethnobiological perspective, this study analyzed and documented the relationship between these bean varieties and the women of Covunco Abajo. A total of nine households with seed houses were recorded, involving 13 participants at different stages of the study. Through workshops, conversations, shared mate, and interviews, the research reconstructed the story behind the beans of Covunco, the diversity maintained, and the knowledge and practices associated with their cultivation and conservation.
