The Triadic Relational Supervision Model: A Conceptual Framework for Supervisor-Supervisee-AI Dynamics

Abstract

Supervision has traditionally been viewed as a dyadic process between supervisor and supervisee. The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in counselor education and supervision may challenge this view and may require new conceptual understanding. This article proposes the Triadic Relational Supervision Model (TRSM), a theoretically derived, heuristic framework grounded in alliance theory, attachment theory, and human-computer interaction research rather than as an empirically validated model. TRSM conceptualizes supervision as a triadic system among supervisor, supervisee, and AI, intersecting within a shared supervision alliance that may be characterized by transparency, safety, trust calibration, and reflective learning. The framework is intended to guide future empirical inquiry and practice refinement.
