Abstract

Between 1581 and 1596, the Augustinian father Diego de Rojas carried out an important pedagogical work in the Philippine provinces of Cagayán, Ilocos and Pangasinán and contributed decisively to the pacification of the local population. In the different places where he lived, he created schools in which, in addition to doctrine, reading and writing, he taught to sing Gregorian chant and polyphony and to play aerophone instruments such as flutes and shawms, from which derives the need for importation of musical sources and instruments that came to these islands from the metropolis with the Manila galleon.
