Abstract

This Open Educational Resource presents a comprehensive teaching module on Information Transfer, focusing on converting data between textual and visual formats such as pie charts, tree diagrams, and flow charts. The material is designed for General English – Semester I undergraduate students and provides a structured and practical approach to developing analytical and communication skills. The resource includes: Conceptual Understanding definition of information transfer as the process of converting information from one form to another (text ↔ visual) importance in communication, comprehension, and exams Types of Information Transfer Pie Chart – representation of percentages and parts of a whole Tree Diagram – classification and hierarchical relationships Flow Chart – step-by-step processes Writing Techniques step-by-step methods for describing charts and diagrams use of linking words such as first, next, then, finally emphasis on clarity, sequence, and simplicity Practical Examples pie chart showing time distribution (page 5) tree diagram showing classification (page 6) flow chart showing process of making tea (pages 7–8) Sample Paragraphs model descriptions for pie chart, tree diagram, and flow chart (page 10) guidance on converting visual data into structured paragraphs Common Errors and Corrections avoiding disorganized writing avoiding complex language ensuring inclusion of key data points Educational Features classroom activities (conversion exercises, interpretation tasks) student engagement exercises model questions: 1-mark objective questions 4-mark answers (~75 words) 6-mark answers (~100–150 words) Pedagogical Value enhances analytical thinking and comprehension improves writing and presentation skills useful for academic exams and real-life communication The resource is especially suitable for: undergraduate students rural and non-English medium learners competitive exam aspirants skill enhancement courses
