Platypus westwoodi Chapuis 1865

Abstract

107. Platypus westwoodi Chapuis Figs 36–37 Platypus westwoodi Chapuis, 1865: 236. Distribution. ‘Borneo’, Indonesia (Java, Sumatra), East & West Malaysia, Thailand. Distribution in W. Malaysia. Pahang *, Penang, Perak *, Selangor *. New records. Pahang, Banjaran Benom mts., 20 km S of Kampong Ulu Dong, 1500–1900m, 17–23.iv.1997, P. Čechovský (1); Perak, 25 km NE of Ipoh, Banjaran Titiwangsa mts, Mt Korbu, 1200m, 11–16.i.1999, P. Čechovský (1); Selangor, Sg. Lalang, 17.ix.1956, K. D. Menon, on Dyera costulata log, FRIM-COLEOPTERA-00007722, Old collection no: 805. Hosts. Polyphagous (Browne 1961a; Ohno 1990). Browne (1961a) suggests that it avoids the families Dipterocarpaceae and Fagaceae, even though they are abundant in the forests. However, it has since been recorded in timber of several genera of Dipterocarpaceae (Ohno 1990). Recorded here from Dyera costulata (Apocynaceae). Biology. It is found in both lowland and upland forests up to about 1300 m. It usually attacks large logs or injured trees of more than 15 cm diameter, and attacks are often numerous. The frass is ejected as fine, short fibres (Browne 1961a).
