Abstract

Scione distincta (Schiner, 1868) (Fig. 25A–D) Diclisa distincta Schiner, 1868: 102; Kertész, 1900: 14 (cat.); Ricardo, 1900a: 104 (NHMUK spp.); Hunter, 1900: 135 (cat.); Enderlein, 1925: 300 (tax.). Scione distincta; Ricardo, 1902: 435 (NHMUK spp.); Kertész, 1908: 149 (cat.); Surcouf, 1919: 221 (Ecuador spp.); 1921: 114 (comm.); Kröber, 1930: 169 (rev.); 1934: 233 (cat.); Stone, 1944: 128 (Venezuela spp.); Bequaert & Renjifo-Salcedo, 1946: 62 (Colombia spp.); Fairchild, 1967c: 246 (Schiner’s type); 1971: 26 (cat.); Moucha, 1976: 40 (cat.); Fairchild & León, 1986: 105 (Ecuador spp.); Fairchild & Burger, 1994: 49 (cat.); Chainey et al., 1994: 326 (tax.); Coscarón & Papavero, 2009: 52 (cat.). Type locality. “ South America ” (Venezuela). Diagnosis. Body yellowish-brown. Thorax with three yellowish longitudinal stripes. Wing slightly smoky, brown veins with faint brown spots on crossveins. Femora brown, tibiae and tarsi orange. Redescription. Female. Body length: 10 mm, wing length: 10.7 mm. Head. Frons divergent below (divergence index 0.6), frontal index 1.7. Frons without patch. Vertex dark brown with dense and long black setulae, ocellar triangle not very prominent, ocelli dark brown. Frons brown and undercoat with yellowish pruinosity, frons with dense long black setulae. Parafacial brown with yellowish pruinosity. Gena covered with yellowish pruinosity and dense long yellowish setulae. Clypeus yellowish brown with yellowish pruinosity and long dense black setulae and some yellowish setulae, clypeal index 0.6. Antenna yellow-orange. Scape and pedicel with yellowish pruinosity and long dense black setulae. Flagellum with last segment darkened. First segment of the palpus dark brown with dense and long yellowish and black setulae; second segment orange on the posterior margin and with short black setulae. Proboscis shiny dark brown, about 2x the height of the frons. Thorax. Scutum and scutellum black. Scutum with short dense yellow and black setulae. Scutellum with long dense black and yellow setulae. Scutum with yellowish longitudinal stripes. The median stripe is not very evident and does not extend to the posterior margin of the scutum. Sublateral and lateral stripes connected by a yellowish stripe at the transverse suture. The sublateral stripes extend to the posterior margin of the scutum, where they become wider. Notopleuron with tuft of long dense black setulae. Anepisternum, katepisternum and anepimeron with long dense yellowish setulae and some black setulae. Postalar callus with a tuft of dense long yellowish setulae. Coxae and trochanters dark brown with long dense black setulae. Femora with long dense black and yellowish setulae, proximal portion dark brown and distal portion orange. Tibiae and tarsi orange. Tibiae with short dense yellow setulae. Tarsi with short dense yellow setulae in the proximal portion and short dense black setulae in the distal portion. Wing slightly smoky, brown veins with faint brown spots on crossveins. Abdomen. Tergites yellow with sparse black and yellowish setulae, denser black setulae on tergites 6 and 7. Tergite 1 with brown anterior margin. Tergite 2 with an integument median dark brown patch. Tergites 1 to 6 with slightly dense posterior bands of whitish-yellow setulae and a tuft of whitish-yellow setulae on the middle of posterior margin. Sternites with sparse, long yellowish setulae. Sternites 1 to 6 with slightly dense posterior bands of whitish setulae. Distribution. Venezuela, Colombia, Peru *. Type material examined. Holotype, ♀, deposited at the NMW (examined through photographs). Additional material examined. 1 ♀, “ Peru, CA[jamarca], San Ignacio, Tabaconas, 2549 m, 5º11’56.7”S, 79º20’21.1”O, 13–15.x.2017, P. Sánchez ” (UNMSM). Comments. In the specimen examined the frons is a little more divergent than in the type and the thoracic stripes are more evident, and besides that, the setulae of the abdomen of the holotype are denser than in the specimen seen here, which has lost many setulae.
