MALESTAR PSICOLÓGICO EN ESTUDIANTES DE ENFERMERÍA DE UNA UNIVERSIDAD PÚBLICA EN ARMENIA (COLOMBIA): ESTUDIO TRANSVERSAL

Abstract

Article type: Original Research Article Psychological distress is defined as emotional, cognitive, and physical discomfort arising from stressful experiences, particularly affecting young university students. This phenomenon has intensified among students in highly demanding fields such as nursing, due to the combination of academic workload and clinical practice. Objective: To characterize the manifestations of psychological distress in nursing students at the University of Quindío during the year 2024. Method: A quantitative, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence and severity of psychological distress in a sample of 90 students randomly selected from semesters 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9, aged between 18 and 29 years. The Kessler K-10 scale was used as the main instrument to measure the frequency and severity of symptoms related to stress, anxiety, and depression. Results: A high prevalence of symptoms such as unexplained fatigue (71.1%), nervousness (71%), and depressive episodes (58.9%) was observed, with significant variation according to the academic semester. An increase in psychological distress was identified in intermediate and final semesters, particularly in the seventh semester, where the highest severity of depressive symptoms was reported. Conclusion: The combination of academic demands and clinical practice directly influences the manifestation and severity of psychological distress. This study highlights the need to implement institutional strategies aimed at promoting mental health and emotional well-being, adapted to the different stages of nursing education.
