This review examines Hernán Taboada’s introduction to Discursos sobre la historia universal en la América criolla, 1770-1850 (Discourses on Universal History in Creole Spanish America, 1770–1850) and highlights four interpretive axes: the historiocentric character of Latin American identity, the nineteenth-century construction of Euro-Creolism, the conjuncture in which America could imagine itself as a center, and the tension between academic knowledge and extra-academic forms of historical elaboration. It argues that Taboada restores historical density to the question of identity and shows that dependence on external gazes constitutes a historical form of organizing knowledge and power.
