Abstract

This text examines the determination of the subject matter of philosophy in the introduction to Ignacio Ellacuría’s Philosophy of Historical Reality. It argues that philosophy, unlike the particular sciences, must clarify its own field of inquiry under the horizon of totality. Through a critical dialogue with Aristotle, Hegel, Marx, and Zubiri, the study shows that Ellacuría rejects both the notion of a merely logical whole and the closed abstractions of idealism and dogmatic materialism, in order to affirm an intramundane metaphysics grounded in the physical, dynamic, and respective unity of reality. Within this framework, historical reality emerges as the highest and densest mode of manifestation of the real, because it integrates and actualizes prior levels in an open process of realization. History thus becomes the proper and ultimate object of philosophy, keeping metaphysical thought intrinsically open to praxis.
