Afrofuturism has emerged as a critical lens for exploring how African societies envision their futures, particularly in contexts where colonial legacies and contemporary socio-economic challenges intersect with cultural resilience. The research employs a triangulated approach combining in-depth interviews, focus groups, and document analysis. Data were collected from diverse urban and rural communities across South Africa. Participants articulated a strong desire for sustainable development that integrates traditional knowledge with modern technologies, emphasising the need to address climate change impacts on indigenous livelihoods. The findings reveal a nuanced understanding of future orientations in South Africa, highlighting the importance of integrating local cultural values and practices within broader global trends. Future research should explore how Afrofuturist narratives can be used as policy tools to inform sustainable development strategies that are culturally inclusive and equitable.
