Ottoman Nufus and Temettuaat Defters for Satuchin/Sotochino (Gavril Genovo), Berkovitsa Kaza, 1831-1845:

Abstract

This dataset contains full transcriptions and Bulgarian translations of five Ottoman registers (defters) relating to the village of Satuchin (Bulgarian: Soтochino, present-day Gavril Genovo, Georgi Damyanovo municipality, Montana region, northwestern Bulgaria). The registers span 1831–1845 and comprise three nüfus (population) defters and one temettuat (income/assets) defter from the Ottoman State Archives (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi, Istanbul), plus one temettuat defter for the neighbouring village of Ravna. The nüfus defters record all male inhabitants by household, with physical descriptions and approximate ages. The temettuat defter records household income, agricultural output, and livestock for tax assessment purposes. These documents have not previously been published or made publicly available. The transcription and translation were commissioned by Boris Stefanov and carried out by Dr. Alcan Cafer Mustafa (Director, Regional Historical Museum, Targovishte, Bulgaria), specialist in Ottoman Turkish paleography. A companion article correlating these sources with a 1968 manuscript village history, civil death records, and DNA genealogical data is published separately.
