Lianas. Stems terete, brown, hollow when young; glabrous on stems, young branches, stipules, stipels, petiole, petiolules, rachis and inflorescence. Petiole 8–10 cm long, sulcate; rachis 30–40 mm long, sulcate; stipels 1–2 mm long, linear; petiolules 6–8 mm, terete; leaflets chartaceous, elliptic to ovate, base rounded, truncate or cordate, apex 4–7 mm long, mucronate or rounded; secondary veins 7–11 pairs, dorsal surface and lower surface glabrous; lateral leaflets 8–20 × 8–13 cm; distal leaflet 8–23 × 8–13 cm. Inflorescence a pseudoraceme 65 cm long, erect, axillary; peduncle 30 cm long; brachyblasts 4–5.5 cm long, straight, 10–25 mm apart; first order bract (at the brachyblast attachment) unknown; second order bract (at the pedicel attachment) 2–3 × 1–2 mm, ovate, sericeous, canescent; bracteoles 10–12 × 8–12 mm, rounded, sericeous, canescent; pedicel 8–10 mm long. Flowers 4–4.5 cm long; calyx 18–22 × 8–12 mm, 4-lobed, tubular, without a hump behind the dorsal sepal, canescent sericeous; dorsal lobe 8–10 × 8–10 mm, triangular; lateral lobes 8–10 × 4–7 mm, triangular; lower lobe 8–10 × 4–7 mm, triangular; petals glabrous, pink; standard petal 30–35 × 18–22 mm, elliptical, with two callosities at the base, without basal auricles, apex emarginate, claw 3–4 × 1–2 mm; wing petals 28–35 × 12–16 mm, lower lobe rounded, apex rounded, claw 5–7 × up to 1 mm, with a dorsal spur at the beginning of the claw; keel petals 30–37 × 10–12 mm, apex with a rounded beak, claw 4–6 × to 1 mm, with a dorsal spur at the beginning of the claw; stamens up to 35 mm long, all fertile; ovary 4–6 mm long, 4-ovulate, covered with canescent sericeous indumentum, style to 30 mm long, linear, stigma capitate. Legume and seeds unknown. Etymology. The specific epithet comes from the Latin word magnificus, meaning “splendid”, referring to the striking inflorescences of this species. Distribution and habitat. Macropsychanthus magnificus is known only from Guandacanal (Solomon Islands), where it inhabits humid and riverine forests (Fig 3E). Preliminary conservation assessment. This species is only known from two collections comprising two separate locations on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. The Extent of Occurrence is estimated as 8-44 km 2 and the Area of Occupancy (AOO) as 8 km 2, both falling below thresholds for a threatened category under criteria B1 and B2 respectively. However, this area has not been intensively explored by botanists and it is possible that this species occurs on other islands, in which case the EOO and AOO could be much larger. Much of the lowland forest on Guadalcanal has been cleared for agriculture, settlements, and plantations (Olson 2025). These threats are inferred to be contributing to a continuing decline in the area, extent, and quality of habitat for this species. Given the available data, we take a precautionary approach here and propose this species is classified as Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) following the IUCN (2024) criteria. Comments. This species is unusual within the genus due to its larger brachyblasts, measuring 4–5.5 cm in length, and its bracteoles, which measure 10–12 × 8–12 mm. Morphologically, it resembles M. carolinensis in the presence of sericeous indumentum on the inflorescence and flower buds, and flowers, which are 4–4.5 cm long. However, M. carolinensis differs by having significantly smaller brachyblasts (5–17 mm long) and bracteoles (4–5 × 5–6 mm). Paratype. Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, Umasami river, 5 miles inland, 3 July 1965, Whitmore 6010 (K-000980361).
