Visual Culture and Identity Among Youth in South Africa: A Policy Perspective

Abstract

Visual culture plays a significant role in shaping identities among youth in South Africa, reflecting broader socio-cultural dynamics. A qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with young people from diverse backgrounds across urban and rural areas of South Africa. The analysis revealed a strong emphasis on traditional African motifs in youth clothing, with over 70% participants citing these as culturally significant elements. Visual culture is intricately linked to youth identity formation in South Africa, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Policies should support the integration of visual arts education into schools and community programmes to promote cultural awareness and mutual respect among diverse youth groups. visual culture, identity formation, youth, South Africa, policy
