La Nación Marítima Cantábrica

Abstract

Este artículo propone una lectura revisionista disciplinada de la historiamarítima del norte de la Península Ibérica, articulada en torno a dosejes documentales complementarios: la tesis de la continuidad marítimacantábrica entre el año 1000 y 1550, y el análisis operativo de la armadaromana bajo Augusto en el Cantábrico, con especial atención a la ClassisAquitanica durante las Guerras Cántabras (29–19a.C.). La hipótesis centralsostiene que la conquista augustea del norte hispano no produjo la absorcióncultural ni la erradicación técnica que la propaganda imperial quiso acreditar.Antes bien, la incapacidad estructural de Roma para integrar plenamente lacosta cantábrica preservó —y en parte fortaleció— una civilización náuticade raíz atlántica que, tras la romanización parcial y los siglos medievales deinstitucionalización portuaria, se proyectó globalmente a través del ImperioEspañol en América. El caso de Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y el Fuero deAvilés constituyen evidencia sintomal de esa continuidad sociotécnica. Sedistingue metodológicamente entre lo demostrado, lo altamente probable ylo que requiere investigación futura, rechazando tanto el dogmatismo delrelato maestro como la especulación infundada.
