OVERRELIANCE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ACADEMIC LEARNING

Abstract

This article examines the consequences of overrelying on Artificial Intelligence in higher education. Quantitative data from 157 participants reveals a "Blind Spot Paradox": while 100% of students acknowledge AI harms critical thinking, 85.7% use it for homework. Only 14.3% admit personal overreliance, indicating a false sense of autonomy. Empirical evidence, including EEG studies, shows that AI dependency creates "cognitive debt" and weakens neural connectivity. Furthermore, AI users demonstrate lower cognitive engagement, becoming "lazy thinkers". ESP instructors report significant skill degradation in autonomous problem-solving and writing. To mitigate these risks and safeguard academic integrity, the research advocates for reintroducing traditional proctored examinations. Ultimately, balancing technological efficiency with intellectual autonomy is essential to prevent long-term cognitive erosion.
