Abstract

Aan het eind van de zestiende eeuw voeren de eerste Nederlandse schepen naar bestemmingen buiten Europa. In Azië ontwikkelde de VOC een uitgebreid handelsnetwerk, dat vanuit Batavia op Java werd aangestuurd. De WIC, die een handelsmonopolie in het Atlantische gebied had verworven, was minder succesvol. Particuliere kooplieden uit de Republiek namen de handel en scheepvaart op Afrika en Amerika grotendeels van haar over. Naast de handel in goederen speelde ook die in Afrikaanse slaven een belangrijke rol. In de jaren 1790 gingen de door oorlogen geteisterde handelscompagnieën roemloos ten onder en viel de overzeese handel zo goed als stil. in: Nieuwe Maritieme Geschiedenis van Nederland
