Scientific Narrative as Strategic Infrastructure: A Practical Lens for Medical Affairs Leaders Across the Asset Lifecycle

Abstract

This white paper introduces the concept of Scientific Narrative as Strategic Infrastructure for Medical Affairs organizations in the life sciences sector. It proposes a structured framework for connecting scientific interpretation, evidence generation, and stakeholder decision-making across the asset lifecycle. Medical Affairs teams frequently generate substantial volumes of evidence through publications, real-world evidence (RWE), and health economics and outcomes research (HEOR). However, without a coherent interpretive framework, these activities can become fragmented, resulting in duplicated effort, inconsistent interpretation, and reduced strategic impact. The Scientific Narrative framework presented in this paper describes how organizations can align scientific meaning with evidence systems and stakeholder decisions. By establishing a coherent narrative backbone, Medical Affairs teams can better coordinate publications, field scientific exchange, RWE strategy, and cross-functional alignment while maintaining scientific and compliance integrity. Drawing on published guidance from the Medical Affairs Professional Society (MAPS), integrated evidence planning literature, and industry practice, this paper provides a conceptual lens through which Medical Affairs leaders can assess whether their organizations operate in an activity-driven or narrative-driven mode of evidence strategy. The framework is intended to support discussion among Medical Affairs leaders, evidence strategists, and cross-functional stakeholders involved in the development, launch, and lifecycle management of pharmaceutical assets.
