
Abstract: India is predominantly a rural country, with nearly two-thirds of its population living in villages. Rural developmentis essential for the overall growth of the Indian economy. One of the most important institutional mechanisms for rural development in India is the cooperative movement. Cooperative societies are voluntary organizations formed by individuals with common economic interests. This study helps in understanding how cooperatives contribute to agricultural development, employment generation, and social welfare. It also highlights their role in empowering farmers, women, and weaker sections of society. Studying cooperatives is useful for policymakers, researchers, and students to strengthen rural development strategies. The main objectives of the study were to. To study the role of cooperative sector in rural development and To understand the concept of cooperative societies and their role in promoting rural development The study also looks at the challenges faced by cooperatives and their potential to improve the living standards of rural people
