Abstract

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Gonarthrosis is a common cause of chronic pain and disability in older adults. Psychosocial factors, such as perceived stress, may influence functional limitation and the clinical course of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between the level of perceived stress and the degree of functional limitation in patients with gonarthrosis affiliated with a family medicine unit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with gonarthrosis treated at Family Medicine Unit No. 92 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) and the Lequesne algofunctional index were applied. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed using Pearson’s chi-square test. RESULTS: A statistically significant association was identified between high levels of perceived stress and greater functional limitation (χ² = 7.703; p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: Perceived stress is associated with greater functional limitation in patients with gonarthrosis, reinforcing the need for a comprehensive approach at the primary care level.
