THE SYMBOLISM OF THE SNAKE VRITRA IN THE VEDIC CULTURAL TRADITION (COSMOLOGICAL AND ANTHROPOLOGICAL PARALLELS)

Abstract

The subject of the research in this article is the symbolism of the serpent Vritra in Vedic culture. The mythological image of the struggle of the god Indra with the serpent Vritra is associated not only with the cosmological aspect of the macrocosm, but also with the anthropological aspect of the microcosm. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that the author identifies the awakening of the serpent Vritra with the hidden life force of Kundalini. Like a sleeping snake, it is located at the base of the human spine. According to Indian tantric texts, raising Kundalini to the highest chakra can awaken the highest spiritual consciousness in the yogi. Thus, the symbolic content of Indra's victory over Vritra (cosmos over chaos) is nothing other than the transformation of Kundalini into creative power. As a result, a person rises above his biological nature, gaining a spiritual and energetic essence.
