Indian Startups and Their Evolution: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract

Indian Startups and Their Evolution: A Comprehensive Review Author’s Details:Reni Thomas and Priya XavierFaculty of Management, SRMIST, Kattankulathur. AbstractIn the last two decades, India's startup scene has come through a metamorphosis from that of an infant cluster of technology-led startups to that of one among the world's most vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystems. This review compiles the evidence from peer-reviewed scientific journals, industry white papers, government publications, and books to present a summary account of the metamorphosis of Indian startups. The analysis follows historical periods—earliest foundations (1980s–1999), the dot-com and IT-enabled services decade (2000–2009), the unicorn emergence decade (2010–2019), and world maturity (2020–now)—and critically analyzes the enabling drivers of demographic advantage, digital infrastructure, policy reforms, venture capital inflows, and academic-industry partnerships. Sectoral contributions are discussed across e-commerce, fintech, edtech, Health-tech, Agri-tech, SaaS, and Green-tech, and representative unicorn case studies are used to give empirical context. Sustained issues like regulatory overcomplication, unbalanced capital access, talent shortages, and infrastructural clogs are examined, in addition to the promise of deep technology, artificial intelligence, and ventures driven by sustainability. The study concludes with a vision-based strategy that prioritizes sustainable funding, R&D enablement, regional ecosystem creation, and clear regulation for emerging technologies. Scholars, decision-makers, and investors who want to comprehend the development of India's entrepreneurial ecosystem and its consequences for international innovation networks are the target audience for this review Keywords: India, startups, entrepreneurship, venture capital, public policy, innovation ecosystems, fintech, deep technology, digital economy
