Abstract

Appearing in Movies 12-16 are flights of the Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) that were filmed in Patagonia in November 2025. During the flight in Movie 12, the bird flies in to the side of the tree (rather than directly toward the trunk), abruptly transitions from horizontal to vertical flight, rotates about its axis during a long vertical ascent, and lands on a surface that does not face the direction of approach. The same elaborate flight maneuver by an Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) is shown in Figure 1. There are long vertical ascents with rotation about the axis in Movies 1 and 4. Those movies, which were the basis for Figure 1, are from a video that was obtained in January 2007 at a site in Florida where ornithologists had recently reported Ivory-billed Woodpeckers. Another landing with a long vertical ascent (and perhaps some rotation) appears in Movie 5. The other movies show flight characteristics (such as rapid wingbeats and wing sounds) that these closely-related Campephilus woodpeckers have in common.
