Abstract

This chapter analyzes Do the Right Thing as a complex reflection on representation, the gaze, and the responsibility of cinema in the face of racial conflict. This reading starts from the film’s structural ambivalence—between the theatrical and the cinematic, fiction and reality, denunciation and celebration—in order to examine how Spike Lee constructs a visual and narrative dispositif based on the clash of opposites. The study explores the expressivity of the camera, the symbolic function of color and framing, as well as the explicit irruption of both the author and the spectator into the text. Through these strategies, the film reveals itself as an essay on perception and interpretation: on the way one looks and is looked at. Beyond its denunciation of racism, Lee problematizes the very act of filming difference, turning cinema into a space of ethical, aesthetic, and political tension.
