The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin as a Participatory Space

Abstract

The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin as a Participatory Space. Exploratory Research and Conceptualisation of Hybrid Library Labs This publication presents the results of the exploratory research project “Die Staatsbibliothek als Mitmach-Raum. Explorative Erforschung und Konzeptualisierung neuer Partizipationsangebote und Raumnutzungsszenarien am Beispiel des Stabi Lab”, conducted at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin between 2024 and 2026. Funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the project investigates how hybrid library labs can function as participatory and inclusive spaces for engaging with digital cultural heritage data. Taking the Stabi Lab as an empirical case study, the research combines theoretical perspectives from Digital Humanities and Library and Information Science with the analysis of concrete event formats. The publication offers both conceptual and practical reflections on hybrid labs in academic libraries.
