Survey of Water Quality Data in Brazil and its Application in the Amazonian Context

Abstract

Water quality is an indispensable condition for sustainable development, especially when considering the impacts generated by anthropogenic actions, natural causes, or extreme events that alter the physicochemical characteristics of water resources. Therefore, this work aims to present water quality indicators and indices as essential instruments for water monitoring systems to promote the sustainable use of water resources. The central objective of this study is to present indicators and indices as essential tools for controlling and monitoring water quality, as well as to demonstrate an application in the Amazonian context. This was developed through bibliographic research. It was found that water quality indicators and indices resulted from the growing social concern with the environmental consequences of development, which require a large amount of information with increasing levels of complexity. The dissemination of water quality data by the management bodies that carry out the systematic monitoring of water quality in the States, the Federal District, and the Municipalities should be accessible to all.
