Abstract

Castigos y dotrinas que un sabio dava a sus hijas: edición y comentario is a scholarly work by Hernán Sánchez Martínez de Pinillos. It provides a critical edition and analysis of an anonymous Late Medieval Spanish didactic treatise. Original Text: An anonymous instructional manual likely written in the late 15th century. It belongs to the genre of "conduct literature," specially focusing on the education and moral guidance of women. Sánchez M. de Pinillos`s Edition: Originally presented as a doctoral thesis at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1998. It was later published in book format by the Fundación Universitaria Española in 2000. Structure: The book typically consists of roughly 301 pages, including a comprehensive preface, introduction, and the annotated text of the original treatise. The treatise analyzed by Sánchez provides advice from a "wise man" to his daughters, covering various aspects of life for a woman in the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Education and Morality: It emphasizes virtues such as honesty, faithfulness, and the preservation of fame (reputation). Domestic Management: It includes "doctrines" on household economy and the social role of women within the family unit. Gender Controversy: Sánchez’s M. de Pinillos commentary places the work within the 15th-century controversy regarding the status of women in society
