Registered Vehicles by Type - Victoria, Australia, 2016-2025

Abstract

This data set summarises numbers of motor vehicles by type for 2016 and 2020-2025. The data is sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for 2016, 2020 and 2021 (https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/industry/tourism-and-transport/motor-vehicle-census-australia/latest-release), and from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) for 2022 (https://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/2024/road-vehicles-australia-january-2022-re-issue) and for 2023-2025 (https://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/2025/road-vehicles-australia-january-2025). For each source, data for the State of Victoria was used. The dataset comprises three tables: ABS data, BITRE data, and a Summary table combining the data from both sources. The ABS and BITRE tables include notes on the categorisation of the vehicles and how the data from the two sources has been combined. This data is very high-level and does not categorise vehicles beyond very basic types. For example, "passenger cars" includes sedans, SUVs and minivans (https://www.abs.gov.au/methodologies/motor-vehicle-census-australia-methodology/31-jan-2021#glossary).
