Abstract

This work starts with a general introduction about the beginnings of Hispanism within the academic framework of second language teaching in the United States. There is information provided about the first universities, cultural Hispanic institutions and associations devoted to the study on modern languages. Besides, the work focuses on the job of these institutions in the promotion of the Hispanic language and cultures during the XIX century and beginnings of XX. It is also enhanced the role of Spanish institutions along with their protagonists on the international development and spreading of the Spanish culture and its language as, for instance, the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios, Centro de Estudios Históricos and the Residencia de estudiantes de Madrid in the last part of the period covered by this research. Special attention is given to Federico de Onís, who was in charge of the establishment of the proper and necessary relations between contemporary authors, Spanish intellectuals and American editors and content curators along with the editorial activity around the publication of Spanish literary works with didactic purposes for their use in the Spanish language classroom during the period between 1890 and 1936, from which conclusions on their didactic approaches and the cultural receptions on their readers are drawn. The analysis of this corpus thoroughly describes the typology of the Spanish literary works published in the United States with didactic purposes, their main characteristics of format and usage in the classroom and the trace these works left among their readers. Finally, there is a deep analysis on their genres, the reasons for the use of these works and the authors¿ representativeness within this new literary canon in the Spanish language teaching.

Este trabajo comienza con una introducción general del nacimiento del hispanismo en el marco de la enseñanza de segundas lenguas en los Estados Unidos. Se ofrece información sobre las universidades pioneras, primeras instituciones culturales hispánicas y asociaciones que se dedicaron al estudio de las lenguas modernas. También, se presta atención a la difusión de la lengua y la cultura hispánica durante el siglo XIX y principios del XX. A continuación se analiza el papel de las instituciones españolas y personas involucradas en la expansión internacional de la cultura española y su lengua a principios del siglo XX como la Junta de Ampliación de Estudios, el Centro de Estudios Históricos y la Residencia de estudiantes de Madrid. Se presta especial atención a Federico de Onís como profesor (filólogo) encargado de establecer las relaciones pertinentes entre autores contemporáneos, intelectuales españoles y editoriales norteamericanas junto a un análisis de la actividad editorial entorno a la publicación de obras literarias españolas con intenciones didácticas para su uso en el aula de ELE entre 1890 y 1936, del cual se extraen conclusiones didácticas y sobre la recepción cultural en sus lectores. En el análisis de este corpus literario se describe pormenorizadamente la tipología de obras publicadas en los Estados Unidos con intenciones didácticas, sus características principales de formato y su utilidad en el aula, para establecer una breve comparación con las obras editadas en la actualidad y calibrar sus diferencias y similitudes. Finalmente, se ofrece un análisis pormenorizado de los géneros, las razones para su uso y la representatividad de los autores y de algunas de sus obras en este nuevo canon literario didáctico en la enseñanza de ELE.
