Capturing Real-Time Video and Timelapse of the Northern Lights Auroras move fast, and capturing that motion is where the magic happens. Professional aurora chaser and space physics Ph.D. student Vincent Ledvina will share a practical, field-tested workflow for recording the northern lights as real-time video and clean, cinematic timelapse. You’ll learn how to choose the right tools for the job, including cameras or phones, lenses, tripods and intervalometers, as well as settings that balance image quality with low-light performance. Vincent will also cover on-location techniques for framing auroras, managing rapid brightness changes and building sequences that tell a story instead of simply documenting the scene. Auroras do not appear in random places at random times, and you can use that knowledge to your advantage when choosing compositions. To help you set up intelligently, he will explain how auroral substorms evolve and how to anticipate where auroras will appear in the sky. The talk will also dive deep into processing for real-time video and timelapses. Vincent will discuss software for deflickering and noise reduction, plus practical export settings. After this presentation, you will be ready to create a polished timelapse or real-time video that shows the true beauty of auroras in motion. About this speaker Vincent Ledvina is a space physics Ph.D. student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Aside from his current research, which focuses on what causes auroral “substorms,” he is passionate about sharing his love for the northern lights with others. Part of Vincent’s work involves leveraging participatory science data from aurora chasers who can provide valuable insights into how particularly rare auroral phenomena are created. Vincent also runs aurora photography workshops in Fairbanks, Alaska, owns a northern lights tour company, and is a professional photographer and aurora chaser himself. He is an expert in timelapse photography and real-time video recording of auroras. Outside of Alaska, Vincent recently joined the Space Weather Advisory Group, a federal advisory committee serving the White House, as their first-ever student representative. Originally from Minnesota, he loves to travel and spend time outdoors.
