The Hazardous Materials Shipment datasets are a table in the National Transportation Statistics report, compiled every year by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Commerce U.S. Census Bureau (DOC - Census). For the 2021 Report, the Hazardous Materials tables were in Section 1.D (https://www.bts.gov/topics/national-transportation-statistics, accessed 2/3/2026). For each year 1960, plus 1970 - 2020, all of the files downloaded were named with the year beginning the title. Each year in the collection has at least the National Transportation Statistics report for that year; some years also have a “Commodity Flow Survey” (CFS) as well. For the latter, “CFS” is in the filename title. Where a file has “National Transportation Statistics” in the filename, that is a PDF printed from the landing page for that year’s report entry. For a couple of years (2021 and 2024, e.g.) there are tables or zip files also available, and for those as well if there is “CFS” in the filename it pertains to the Commodity Flow Survey, where no “CFS” means that file pertains to the National Transportation Statistics report. Quoted from https://www.bts.gov/topics/national-transportation-statistics (accessed 2/3/2026): “The National Transportation Statistics (NTS) is a collection of transportation data first published in November 1971. “ Quoted from https://www.bts.gov/tsar (accessed 2/3/2026): “The Transportation Statistics Annual Report (TSAR) presents an overview of the U.S. transportation system and key indicators, including data and statistics on passenger travel, freight movement, transportation and the economy, system reliability, safety, energy use, and the environmental impacts of transportation. The report also focuses on closing data gaps and improving the ways transportation statistics are collected, compiled, analyzed, and published. BTS is required by its authorizing legislation to prepare and submit the Transportation Statistics Annual Report to Congress and the President each year.”
