El petróleo venezolano: historia, dependencia tecnológica y el desafío futuro

Abstract

Este trabajo describe un siglo de historia petrolera venezolana, marcada por una dependencia estructural de tecnología extranjera desde sus inicios y nunca superada plenamente. Examina la complejidad técnica de la Faja del Orinoco, cuyas enormes reservas extrapesadas requieren diluyentes importados y procesos avanzados que el país no domina de forma autónoma. Se describe el colapso de los mejoradores, la pérdida del potencial tecnológico de INTEVEP y el abandono de innovaciones como la Orimulsión, aprovechadas posteriormente por otros países. El estudio detalla la destrucción progresiva de la industria: pérdida de talento, caída de inversiones, deterioro de infraestructura y fracaso de megaproyectos. La producción actual ronda los 900.000 bpd, con empresas mixtas aportando cerca de la mitad, mientras socios políticos como Rusia, China o Bielorrusia muestran inversiones mínimas. El documento concluye que Venezuela podrá aprovechar mejor su petróleo a futuro si reconstruye capacidades tecnológicas propias, fortalece instituciones y establece alianzas que realmente transfieran conocimiento.
