It is one that knows how to re-enter judgmentafter delegation. Modern systems are optimized for continuity.They assume that once automated,processes should remain automated. Restarting is treated as an exception—a failure mode. But history shows the opposite. Resilient societiesexpect interruption. They design for handover, pause,and return. In narratives symbolized by Astro Boy,crises never marked the end of human agency. They marked its reappearance. Humans stepped back inprecisely when systems reached their limits. A restartable society therefore hasthree visible properties: Legibility — people can seewhen decisions are automated Interruptibility — automation can be pausedwithout stigma Rehearsal — judgment is practicedeven when not strictly needed Without rehearsal,restart becomes panic. Without visibility,interruption becomes blame. Without permission,return becomes rare. The goal is not to distrust AI. The goal is to avoid a societythat only remembers judgmentduring catastrophe. Restartability must be mundane. It should feel normalto say:“Let’s take this back.” Disclaimer This section discusses restartability as a social design principle.It does not propose emergency protocols,but examines how everyday systems can preservehuman re-engagement with decision-making.
