This article examines the representation of the northeastern Sertão in Brazilian cinema and its critical projection in later movements such as Cinema Marginal and Pornochanchada. From Cinema Novo, the Sertão emerges as a symbolic space of social denunciation and political resistance, whose matrix transforms and shifts into the urban context. Thus, the Sertão is understood as a symbolic category that traverses multiple cinematic languages in modern Brazilian cinema.
