Re-adaptation Prospects of Slovak Female Recidivists (Research and Practice)

Perspektywy readaptacyjne słowackich recydywistek (badania i praktyka)

Abstract

Social readaptation is an extremely complex process, and solitary confinement has a devastating impact on the social situation of female prisoners. With subsequent convictions and repeated stays in prison, the social situation of female prisoners deteriorates significantly. Recidivists cannot count on special considerations in isolation, and their penitentiary status creates a number of additional difficulties. Although female prisoners often assume the role of mothers and are focused on them at some point in their lives, debts and addictions have a devastating impact on them. Recidivists also cannot count on the support of a spouse or partner, as men often do. Some prison solutions can support women in their social reintegration process. The Slovak authorities have implemented an important and widespread support instrument – the National Project "Chance to Return." This program supports female prisoners already serving their sentences, enabling them to serve part of their sentences in conditions conducive to rebuilding family relationships. Unfortunately, the small number of women's prisons in Slovakia makes it impossible to serve sentences close to home, thus exacerbating the breakdown of relationships with loved ones. This makes it very difficult for repeat offenders to return to life in freedom, and protective factors appear to be scarce.

Obejmuje on osadzone już w trakcie wykonywania kary kobiety, umożliwiając im odbywanie jej części w warunkach sprzyjających odbudowie relacji rodzinnych.
