The impulse activity of the tarsal and labellar contact chemosensory hairs was recorded. It was shown that the excitation of salt receptors is due to electrolytes and that of sugar receptors to carbohydrates and aminoacids (except lactose, mannitol, threonine). Sugar receptor responses are currents of monophasic positive impulses whereas salt receptor responses are currents of complex potentials comprising a slow negative fluctuation and a positive spike.
