THE HISTORY OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION

Abstract

Abstract This article traces the historical development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, examining its evolution from theoretical concepts to transformative applications in modern learning. Beginning with Alan Turing’s early inquiries into machine intelligence and the advent of Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) systems such as PLATO in the 1960s, it explores how technological and pedagogical innovations laid the foundation for intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive learning platforms. The paper highlights the rise of data-driven education in the 21st century, featuring tools like ChatGPT, Duolingo, and ClassAI that personalize learning, enhance accessibility, and assist educators in real time. While AI has revolutionized teaching and learning through increased efficiency, inclusivity, and personalization, it has also introduced ethical and philosophical dilemmas concerning equity, data privacy, bias, and the risk of dehumanization. The discussion underscores the need for human-centered design, ethical governance, and pedagogical balance to ensure that AI complements rather than replaces human educators. Ultimately, the study concludes that AI represents a profound turning point in the history of education—serving not merely as a technological innovation but as a transformative partner in humanity’s ongoing pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and self-understanding.
