Abstract

The article analyzes methodological features of studying the national identity category as a scientific problem. The author examines issues of semantic uncertainty and the multiplicity of interpretations of the identity concept that have emerged due to its widespread adoption in the humanities. The work reveals distinctions between national, civic, and political identity, as well as the essence of identity politics. Using Arab countries as examples, the constructive nature of national identity and its formation under the influence of religious traditions, language policy, modernization, and globalization processes are demonstrated. The study substantiates the role of identity as an independent factor influencing foreign policy and its significance in determining international relations dynamics. The dual character of identity politics is emphasized, as an intangible resource for social consolidation and simultaneously as a factor capable of increasing risks of social fragmentation. The article justifies the necessity of interdisciplinary, comparative, and institutional approaches in national identity research.
