Abstract

This chapter analyzes the creation, evolution, and consolidation of the Ethics Committee of the Province of Castile (CECAS) of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God over its first twenty-five years of activity (1991–2016). Founded with the aim of humanizing healthcare and providing ethical guidance in clinical and care-related decision-making, the CECAS became a key advisory body for a broad network of healthcare, social healthcare, and social institutions. The study systematically describes the four stages that shaped its historical development, taking into account organizational, methodological, and educational changes, as well as the role played by leading figures in Spanish bioethics. It also examines the committee’s main functions, including the analysis of complex clinical cases, the drafting of ethical documents and guidelines, the training of professionals in bioethics, and the promotion of a culture of ethical deliberation within the institutions of the Order. The chapter highlights the progressive professionalization of the CECAS and the incorporation of systematic methodologies for ethical analysis, underscoring its contribution to improving the quality of healthcare.
