Abstract

This paper analyzes the origin and development of healthcare ethics committees, situating their emergence within the context of U.S. clinical bioethics in the second half of the twentieth century and describing their subsequent implementation in Spain. First, it examines the technological, clinical, and social factors that led to the creation of the earliest healthcare ethics committees in the United States, as well as several paradigmatic cases that contributed to their consolidation. Second, it addresses the evolution of these advisory bodies in the Spanish context between 1974 and 1991, highlighting the pioneering experience of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Esplugues and the gradual emergence of committees in other public and private healthcare institutions. The study underscores the interdisciplinary nature of these committees, their non-binding advisory role, and their fundamental contribution to ethical deliberation, the training of healthcare professionals, and the humanization of clinical practice.
