SafeHabitus Deliverable 4.2 Visions of the future of farming: Implications for the attractiveness of farming and food security

Abstract

This report builds directly upon SafeHabitus Deliverable 4.1: Current and future drivers of change and the implications for occupational stressors, which evaluated how current and potential future drivers of agricultural transformation affect the working conditions and occupational stress experienced by farmers and farm workers. This deliverable presents the results of a foresight process focusing on the evolution of EU agriculture to 2060. It explores how contrasting future scenarios might affect working conditions of farmers and farm workers, job quality, well-being, and the attractiveness of the profession. We present the analysis and outcomes of a participatory foresight process conducted with the SafeHabitus Communities of Practice (CoPs) representing 11 EU countries / regions. This process captured EU-wide visions for the future of farming, exploring the implications for labour and working conditions, and consequently, the attractiveness of farming and long-term food security in Europe. The analysis demonstrates that the quality of agricultural working conditions is not only central to retention of the current generation of farmers but also future generations and, consequently, is fundamental to the EU’s long-term food security.
