Abstract

The accelerated loss of biodiversity constitutes one of the most critical environmental challenges facing humanity. This issue is particularly acute in highly diverse and understudied groups such as fungi, whose global conservation status has been assessed in a minimal proportion relative to their known richness. In this study, the conservation status of fungi and myxomycetes (functional analogues of fungi) in Cuba was assessed following the categories and criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), according to the standards established by this organization. A total of 396 species were categorized; the most represented phyla were Ascomycota (188 taxa) and Basidiomycota (133), while im Glomeromycota and Mucoromycota fewer taxa were evaluated, 19 and 4 species, respectively. The results show 78 species in Critically Endangered (CR), 48 Endangered (EN), 53 Vulnerable (VU), 18 Near Threatened (NT), 46 Data Deficient (DD), and 153 as Least Concern (LC).”
