Abstract

Κατά τον 20ο αιώνα οι κτηνοτρόφοι ήταν σε συνεχή αγώνα δρόμου για να αντικαταστήσουν τα ζώα τους με βελτιωμένα ζώα με πολύ υψηλές αποδόσεις σε γάλα και κρέας. Όμως, τα ζώα των υψηλών αποδόσεωνείναι γενικά πιο ευάλωτα σε μεταβολικές ασθένειες ενώ έχουν πολύ μεγάλες απαιτήσεις σε ζωοτροφές. Έτσι, οι παραγωγοί στρέφονται σιγά σιγά προς ντόπιες φυλές ζώων, οι οποίες δεν έχουν υψηλές αποδόσεις αλλά είναι ανθεκτικές σε ακραίες συνθήκες, σε πολύ ψηλές ή χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες, λειψυδρία, υπερβολικά υγρά κλίματα, φτωχή βλάστηση, υψηλά υψόμετρα και μεγάλες κλίσεις.
