Abstract

This paper offers a structured critique of a dominant paradigm in contemporary support and coaching practices, where benevolent presence and non directiveness are treated as sufficient conditions for change. Combining conceptual analysis, acceptability constraints, and the normative effects of professional postures, it shows how the absence of explicit aims, outcome criteria, and real world testing shifts validation toward reported feelings and immediate session feedback. The paper then examines practical consequences of this moral norm, including the practitioner’s protection through stabilized ethical justifications and the rise of implicit moral tribunals that regulate practice more effectively than formal rules. It also outlines the economic and legal conditions that make this paradigm scalable while making long term effects hard to discuss. The paper’s goal is to make limiting frames visible, clarify their costs, and reintroduce accountability for effects.
