Tourism has emerged as one of the most significant contributors to economic growth, employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, and regional development in India. With its vast cultural heritage, diverse natural landscapes, spiritual destinations, and growing infrastructure, India possesses immense potential to position itself as a leading global tourism destination. However, rapid and unplanned growth of tourism has resulted in challenges such as environmental degradation, pressure on natural resources, cultural commodification, infrastructure constraints, and unequal distribution of economic benefits. In this context, sustainable tourism has gained global importance as an approach that balances economic development with environmental protection and socio-cultural preservation. Vision 2047, aligned with the centenary of India’s independence, provides a long-term strategic framework to transform India into a global leader in sustainable tourism. The present study aims to examine the current landscape of tourism in India, analyze global best practices in sustainable tourism, and assess India’s capacity to adopt and implement sustainable tourism strategies under Vision 2047. The study is based on secondary data collected from government reports, international organizations such as UNWTO and WTTC, policy documents, and relevant academic literature. A descriptive and analytical research design has been adopted to evaluate tourism trends, policy initiatives, sustainability challenges, and strategic opportunities. The findings indicate that sustainable tourism can significantly enhance economic growth while ensuring environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. International experiences from countries such as Bhutan, Costa Rica, and New Zealand demonstrate that responsible tourism models generate long-term benefits when supported by strong governance, community participation, and environmental regulations. The study concludes that through integrated policy frameworks, digital transformation, skill development, eco-friendly infrastructure, and inclusive community-led initiatives, India can successfully achieve the objectives of Vision 2047 and emerge as a globally competitive and sustainable tourism destination.
