VOICING WOMANHOOD IN NORTHERN NIGERIAN FICTION: AN ANALYSIS OF AN ABUNDANCE OF SCORPIONS

Abstract

The emergence of contemporary women’s writing in Northern Nigeria is closely associated with the pioneering works of Zaynab Alkali, whose novels mark a significant turning point in the representation of female experiences and aspirations. Beginning with The Stillborn (1984) and followed by The Virtuous Woman (1986), Cobwebs and Other Stories (1997), The Descendants (2005), and The Initiates (2007), Alkali consistently foregrounds women’s struggles against social, cultural, and economic constraints. Central to her literary vision is the conviction that education serves as the most effective instrument for women’s empowerment and self-realization. This study examines Alkali’s portrayal of female characters, with particular emphasis on Li in The Stillborn, as a symbolic representation of transformation from passivity to agency. Through textual analysis, the paper demonstrates how Alkali redefines womanhood in Northern Nigerian literature by presenting education as a catalyst for personal growth, social mobility, and emancipation. Ultimately, the study argues that Alkali’s works not only challenge patriarchal norms but also contribute to the construction of a resilient feminine voice that continues to shape contemporary Nigerian literary discourse
