La psicología y la conducta social humana

Abstract

This chapter provides a systematic introduction to Social Psychology as a scientific discipline, clearly defining its object of study, its main theoretical frameworks, and its research methods, with particular emphasis on the analysis of social human behavior. First, the chapter addresses the definition of Social Psychology and its field of inquiry, which focuses on the study of psychosocial processes that explain how individuals think, feel, and behave in social contexts. It then offers a historical overview of the discipline, describing its development from early theoretical approaches and classical schools (such as behaviorism, psychoanalysis, and Gestalt psychology) to its consolidation as an independent scientific field and its subsequent theoretical and methodological diversification. The chapter also examines the methods of Social Psychology, highlighting the role of experimental, correlational, and observational research, as well as the ongoing debate between quantitative and qualitative approaches. Finally, it introduces the levels of analysis of social behavior—individual, interpersonal, group, and societal—as an integrative framework for understanding the complexity of human behavior in social contexts. Overall, the chapter provides the conceptual and methodological foundations necessary to understand Social Psychology as a key discipline for analyzing human behavior in interaction with others and with the social environment
