Marginal comments on Сarl Schmitt's obituary

Abstract

This essay presents a Ukrainian translation of the obituary of Carl Schmitt published in Der Spiegel, making the source text accessible to a wider scholarly audience. Accompanying the translation are critical commentaries that situate Schmitt within broader intellectual, historical, and normative frameworks. The commentary addresses simplifications and omissions in the obituary’s account of Schmitt’s alignment with National Socialism, while highlighting key Schmittian concepts such as the primacy of the political, the friend–enemy distinction, and sovereign decision. By providing both the translation and interpretive notes, the essay facilitates comparative analysis and contributes to discussions on the methodological and ethical challenges of interpreting politically and morally fraught intellectual figures.
