Sensitive cartographies and artistic practices as a situated method

Abstract

This article examines the potential of sensitive cartographies as a situated methodology for research and community activation in rural contexts affected by depopulation. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates social cartography, artistic practices, critical pedagogy, and Service-Learning, the study is conducted in an inland region of Spain through a mixed-methods design combining interviews, collaborative mapping workshops, audiovisual narratives, and questionnaires administered to university students. The research foregrounds the voices of rural residents and migrants, exploring the relationship between territorial memory, rural identity, and community agency, as well as the transfer of academic knowledge into the public sphere through processes of expanded cartography, materialized in a museum exhibition. The findings are structured around four analytical dimensions: participatory knowledge production, community activation, symbolic representation, and the projection of desirable futures. The study demonstrates that sensitive cartographies function simultaneously as a research methodology, a pedagogical device, and a cultural mediation tool, contributing to the reconstruction of social bonds, the visibility of marginalized memories, and the strengthening of community-based processes in rural territories facing demographic decline.
