¿Podemos ayudar a la migración de los árboles del bosque de niebla?

Abstract

El cambio climático global está impactando el establecimiento de árboles, especialmente en los bosques de montaña. El aumento de la temperatura está provocando la muerte de muchas especies de árboles en las zonas más bajas y su desplazamiento o migración hacia zonas más altas y frías en las montañas. Sin embargo, la deforestación y la limitada capacidad de dispersar sus semillas en algunas especies impiden su migración. La migración asistida (traslado de individuos, desde los sitios donde se distribuyen de manera natural a sitios en donde se presenten condiciones climáticas más favorables para su desarrollo) busca superar el desajuste entre los individuos de una especie y el cambio del clima. Para analizar la respuesta de árboles a la migración asistida, establecimos plantaciones bajo el dosel del bosque con plántulas de 13 especies del bosque de niebla tolerantes a la sombra a lo largo de un gradiente de elevación (1,300 a 2,550 m), en Veracruz, México. La supervivencia del grupo de especies fue alta: 56 % después de ocho años, incluyendo todo el gradiente. Estos resultados muestran que estas especies tienen un alto potencial para usarse en la restauración de bosques degradados, incluso en sitios fuera del área de su distribución original.
